‘Green’ Phoenix Xtra Blankets at drupa

Phoenix Xtra Blankets is banking on climate-friendly printing blankets. At the drupa 2012 print media trade show (May 3-16, Düsseldorf) ContiTech Group will be presenting new products for the printing of packaging materials, heatset printing, and varnishing.

Internally, the reduction of CO2 emissions is being pursued consistently by optimizing the production of Phoenix printing blankets. “Our motto ‘Your Needs First – People and Environment’ applies both to the production of printing blankets as well as to environmental matters,” according to Sven Speier, sales manager at PHOENIX Xtra BLANKETS. The manufacturer climate-neutralizes the remaining CO2 generated during the production process with certificates – without any additional costs for the customers.

The product highlights for the printing of packaging materials include the Tanzanite and Solaris UV printing blankets, which were developed inhouse especially for metal decoration and cardboard printing and are ideal for large-format machines. Thanks to their two specially harmonized compressible layers, the printing blankets develop optimum feeding characteristics and transfer properties regardless of the thickness and condition of the material to be printed. This is an immense advantage, particularly for users printing metal and packaging. “In practical tests, the performance benefits have clearly been confirmed,” says Speier.

For modern heatset printing, the company is introducing the new Phoenix Marathon, a further development based on the Phoenix Amaranth. For high-speed heatset machines, the printing blanket is only available with a thickness of 1.7 mm. Its optimized feeding characteristic means that the cylinder generates less heat, which reduces ink buildup and, in turn, leads to longer intervals between washes. “All this makes Phoenix Marathon an economically viable product in the demanding field of large-scale heatset printing,” says Speier.

The blanket is suitable for both UV and water-based varnishes and satisfies highest demands for varnishing in offset printing.
