World Young Reader Prizes

Who says newspapers aren't attractive to young readers? Twenty-four World Young Reader Prize winners, from a wide variety of countries and cultures, demonstrate there is much newspapers can do to attract the next generation of readers.

From the World Young Reader Newspaper of the Year – the Jawa Pos in Indonesia – through the winners of jury commendations, the 2011 Young Reader Prize winners show how newspapers can successfully appeal to younger audiences in the digital age. “Our jury of past prize winners and young readership development experts was particulary impressed with the range of great practice this year, from a deceptively simple literacy project to a very effective newspaper-based social network for young people interested in business,” said Aralynn McMane, executive director of young readership development at the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA).

WAN-IFRA annually awards the World Young Reader Prizes to newspapers that have devised the best project or activity to attract young readers. Support for the prizes comes from Norske Skog, the Norway-based global paper producer, as part of its partnership in WAN-IFRA’s Newspapers in Education Development Project.

The awards will be presented on 12 October in Vienna during the World Newspaper Congress and World Editors Forum. Top winners come from Brazil, Indonesia, India, Portugal, The Philippines and the United States.
